The Bottom Line - improving your bottom line utilising practical digital technology

The next Digital Enterprise Program guest speaker and workshop presenter will be Michael Terlich.

Michael is the Manager of the Private Cloud Solutions at Acceler8 Technologies. He has 20 years experience in the IT industry, having worked for local, national and multinational companies managing networks from as little as 2 users up to 1700 users. He has been on all sides of the industry - as an employer, an employee, a contractor - implementing systems such as Microsoft, Cisco and Citrix. This experience enables him to look at the technical needs of a business whilst also understanding, protecting and improving the bottom line.

Having been born and bred in the country, living and working in the city and travelling to the country for work held no appeal. This drove Michael to design a system for Acceler8 that allowed him and his family to do the reverse - live in the country and deliver services to the city.

It became apparent that not only did other businesses in regional and rural Australia not have access to the same sort of IT solutions and support of their city counterparts, they were paying much more for it. A large proportion of regional businesses were not being shown new technology and how the use of this technology could reduce their IT costs whilst increasing their business productivity and profits.

Michael’s mantra became 'work is something you do, not somewhere you go’' and the correct use of technology allows business owners to grow their businesses and increase profits whilst also having a lifestyle they enjoy.

This led Michael, seven years ago, to design and implement a private cloud solution that could be delivered via Sydney or Brisbane data centres or on site at the client's premises regardless of their location. Michael became passionate about servicing regional areas and has since delivered services and advice to many businesses and local government organisations allowing them to digitally compete with city areas, provide the latest technologies to their staff, save on travel costs and grow their business, whilst reducing their overall IT costs.

Michael's focus has become not only to be able to give regional Australia access to up to date technology but to show businesses how to grow and improve their bottom line by its practical use.

Don’t miss Michael's keynote seminar on Tuesday evening addressing the practical use of digital technology to give lifestyle choices, improve productivity, grow your business and increase your bottom line.

Broadband Innovation Expert Keynote Tomorrow Evening

Geof Heydon is the Business Development Manager at CSIRO's Australian Centre for Broadband Innovation where he is responsible for building a successful ecosystem of Broadband enabled innovation for Australia.

We are thrilled to have Geof as resident expert for this weeks's Digtial Enterprise Program
Workshop and Seminar entitled The NBN: high speed broadband is here.

Mr Heydon has over 35 years experience in all aspects of the electronics, telecommunications and IT industries. He has both national and international experience driving the market toward the digital economy.

Mr Heydon will present a keynote seminar at Armidale Campus of TAFE (M Block Dining Room) on Tuesday 8 May, at 6pm. This session is open to the public and is free of charge as are all the Digital Enterprise Program events.

Geof Heydon's key note will focus on the following:

The Digital Economy is rapidly becoming the whole economy. The ICT sector is enabling all sorts of innovation across every sector. Geof will discuss three key dimensions of this.

1. The NBN. What it is and what it isn't and why it matters?

2. The innovation in device electronics and particularly the relentless improvements in screen technology and application frameworks that will see the networks and the Web become almost completely invisible to the average user.

3. The changing nature of people from one generation to the next. The so-called digital natives demand different things than the digital immigrants. When we bring all these things together, then complexity will be hidden and people can get on with doing what they want and need without even being aware of the technology that is affecting them.

Geof hopes to stimulate creativity and innovation through the many examples that will be discussed.

This session is open to the public and is free of charge as are all the Digital Enterprise Program events.

Armidale Life Planning Workshop for Women: Sunday 29th April, 2012

The 10thousandgirl Campaign is coming to Armidale with their highly successful and inspirational Life Planning Workshop to be held on Sunday 29th April.

This workshop aims to improve the financial literacy of 10,000 Australian women, inspiring them to pursue their life plan with a confidence and independence backed by financial security.

10thousandgirl brings personal finance to life, making it informative, engaging and fun and aims to inspire a ripple effect; when a girl knows where she’s heading and how to get there, she is able to help others and inspire those around her.

“We know that when women put their mind to it, they can achieve their dreams with unyielding energy, and, in turn, inspire and help those around them. That’s the role of 10thousandgirl - to encourage and motivate women to practice sound financial management and get engaged in future planning,” said Zoe Lamont, Founder of 10thousandgirl.

10thousandgirl was started by a group of young women in a Sydney pub in 2009. Before long they realised the importance and long term benefit of having a plan and understanding finance basics so they could make their plans happen. More and more women started to come. The campaign now has a board of directors and has grown to educate 1000’s of women across Australia every year with the initiative attracting national and more recently global recognition in their bid to contribute to increasing the wellbeing and economic health of women. The programs are delivered by passionate and committed volunteers in partnership with national and local community, government and private organisations.

Elizabeth Egan from the Armidale Business Chamber is delighted to be involved with this very positive and engaging campaign. “This program links very well with what we are trying to provide through our New England Enterprising Women’s program and we are very happy that local sponsors have seen this workshop as a valuable opportunity for local women and have helped bring it to Armidale,” says Ms Egan.

The dynamic Life Planning Workshops are being sponsored locally by Forsyths, Wilson & Co Lawyers and Roberts and Morrow Chartered Accountants.

The financial education of young women is vital, so that they can reach their potential, increase their options and lead fulfilling lives. Wilson & Co Lawyers is delighted to be actively involved in supporting our local community, by being an Armidale sponsor of the 10thousandgirl Campaign’, says Fiona Miron from Wilson & Co Lawyers.

The 10thousandgirl interactive full-day Life Planning workshop is suitable for women of all ages and financial stages. We say if you feel like a girl, you’re welcome!

By attending the Life Planning Workshop you can be one of 10,000 girls working together to lead inspired, mindful and self-funded lives. Set up your own plan for the future and financial foundations, and in the process make a global contribution to eradicating extreme poverty through the use of microfinance.

2012 Armidale Business Awards and the Armidale Business Chamber is bracing itself for what promises to be the biggest (and arguably the best) ceremony in the history of the Awards.

The Chamber has had a great deal of interest in the 2012 Awards already, with over 130 businesses and individuals already nominated.

David Simmons, Chief Executive Officer from Forsyths Chartered Accountants was delighted by their business nomination success.

‘Thank you for the notification that Forsyths have been nominated in three Armidale Business Awards categories. We are particularly proud of Kylie Alcorn’s nomination in the New England Enterprising Woman category.’

The Awards ceremony will be held on the 1st June this year and will feature new categories and a new ‘yet to be announced’ host.

8 Qualities of Remarkable Employees - Jeff Haden

Great employees are reliable, dependable, proactive, diligent, great leaders and great followers... they possess a wide range of easily-defined—but hard to find—qualities.

A few hit the next level. Some employees are remarkable, possessing qualities that may not appear on performance appraisals but nonetheless make a major impact on performance.

Here are eight qualities of remarkable employees:

1. They ignore job descriptions. The smaller the company, the more important it is that employees can think on their feet, adapt quickly to shifting priorities, and do whatever it takes, regardless of role or position, to get things done.

When a key customer's project is in jeopardy, remarkable employees know without being told there's a problem and jump in without being asked—even if it's not their job.

2. They’re eccentric... The best employees are often a little different: quirky, sometimes irreverent, even delighted to be unusual. They seem slightly odd, but in a really good way. Unusual personalities shake things up, make work more fun, and transform a plain-vanilla group into a team with flair and flavor.

People who aren't afraid to be different naturally stretch boundaries and challenge the status quo, and they often come up with the best ideas.

3. But they know when to dial it back. An unusual personality is a lot of fun... until it isn't. When a major challenge pops up or a situation gets stressful, the best employees stop expressing their individuality and fit seamlessly into the team.

Remarkable employees know when to play and when to be serious; when to be irreverent and when to conform; and when to challenge and when to back off. It’s a tough balance to strike, but a rare few can walk that fine line with ease.

4. They publicly praise... Praise from a boss feels good. Praise from a peer feels awesome, especially when you look up to that person.

Remarkable employees recognize the contributions of others, especially in group settings where the impact of their words is even greater.

5. And they privately complain. We all want employees to bring issues forward, but some problems are better handled in private. Great employees often get more latitude to bring up controversial subjects in a group setting because their performance allows greater freedom.

Remarkable employees come to you before or after a meeting to discuss a sensitive issue, knowing that bringing it up in a group setting could set off a firestorm.

6. They speak when others won’t. Some employees are hesitant to speak up in meetings. Some are even hesitant to speak up privately.

An employee once asked me a question about potential layoffs. After the meeting I said to him, “Why did you ask about that? You already know what's going on.” He said, “I do, but a lot of other people don't, and they're afraid to ask. I thought it would help if they heard the answer from you.”

Remarkable employees have an innate feel for the issues and concerns of those around them, and step up to ask questions or raise important issues when others hesitate.

7. They like to prove others wrong. Self-motivation often springs from a desire to show that doubters are wrong. The kid without a college degree or the woman who was told she didn't have leadership potential often possess a burning desire to prove other people wrong.

Education, intelligence, talent, and skill are important, but drive is critical. Remarkable employees are driven by something deeper and more personal than just the desire to do a good job.

8. They’re always fiddling. Some people are rarely satisfied (I mean that in a good way) and are constantly tinkering with something: Reworking a timeline, adjusting a process, tweaking a workflow.

Great employees follow processes. Remarkable employees find ways to make those processes even better, not only because they are expected to… but because they just can't help it.

Jeff Haden learned much of what he knows about business and technology as he worked his way up in the manufacturing industry. Everything else he picks up from ghostwriting books for some of the smartest leaders he knows in business. @jeff_haden

The Tour de Rocks - Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities

Be inspired to make a difference - a message from Bill Wheeler

We have all been touched by the big "C". I nursed my Dad as he died a fairly ordinary death from cancer . I have had a number of family members taken early, family that have had to endure the suffering of radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. You will have similar stories and experiences. We are the lucky ones that have been given a chance to do something to reduce the incidence, severity and eventually eliminate cancer.

If you think you may be able to contribute in any way, can ride a pushbike or wish to have fun as a supporter; come along to our information session this Friday.

Pass this message on to your friends, put it on face book - spread the word. Bring them along to be inspired by Gary Bertwistle and Geoff Coombes, learn from their experiences, understand the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction from a successful community event such as this.

In the words of Leo C Rosten:

"I think the purpose to life is be useful, to be responsible, to be compassionate. It is above all to matter: to count, to stand for something, to make some difference that you have lived at all"

2012 Business Awards - Nominate Now!

Nominations are now open for the 2012 Armidale Business Awards and the Armidale Business Chamber is bracing itself for what promises to be the biggest (and arguably the best) ceremony in the history of the Awards.

The Chamber has had a great deal of interest in the 2012 Awards already, with many businesses and individuals asking how they can nominate local businesses for the wide variety of awards up for grabs.

The Awards ceremony will be held on the 1st June this year and will feature new categories and a new ‘yet to be announced’ host.

This year The Chamber has created new categories for some of the areas that have traditionally received a large number of nominations like tourism, accommodation, pubs and clubs and cafes and restaurants.

The 2012 Awards will also feature a new category for Creative Industries as well as the highly coveted Business of the Year Award.

All categories will be judged by a panel of judges who will be looking for the unique qualities of the nominated businesses and what truly sets them apart. This might an innovative product, attention to quality relationship building with clients or perhaps the development and adoption of technology to improve efficiencies.

Nominate Now! http://www.armidalechamber.com.au/business-awards.php

Chamber Business Breakfast to provide NBN update

Federal Independent Member for New England, Tony Windsor will introduce proceedings at the Armidale Business Chamber‘s Business Breakfast this Friday.

This special event entitled ‘The NBN and our Digital Future’ will be an opportunity to hear about the latest developments regarding the National Broadband Network and some of the exciting digital projects underway in Armidale.

Guest speaker for the breakfast event will be Sam Austrin-Miner, Senior Consultant from Attentive Consulting, who has been working closely with Armidale Dumaresq Council and the Armidale Business Chamber on a variety of digital projects including the Digital Economy Strategy and the Digital Local Government Program.

According to Mr Austrin-Miner there is an overemphasis being placed upon what he calls the ‘toys’ being put on the end of the NBN.

“While these are great, and will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the lives of many, the real ‘jewel in the crown’ arising from the National Broadband Network is that it offers regional Australia, not only the opportunity to sustain current jobs, but also the opportunity to create a wealth of new job prospects for many years to come”, he says

Mr Austrin-Miner will give an overview of the current projects, and development opportunities and will also outline the role Armidale is playing as a pilot city for the NBN rollout.

Chamber CEO, Elizabeth Egan, says the relaxed breakfast meeting format has been extremely successful for the New England Enterprising Women’s program and will provide the perfect forum for the information sharing and discussion around the digital future of Armidale.

The NBN Business Breakfast will be catered by NERAM Harvest.

Low Blood Stocks - Open in Armidale 30th November

Australia is critically low on blood supply and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service need donors to come in and top up their stocks.

Across Australia we have less than three days of blood supply available and just 1 day's supply of O negative which is the universal blood type that can be given to anyone in an emergency. Accordingly, at this low level of stock we need to bolster our stocks and we need community support to help achieve that.

Every blood donation saves three lives and the life you save might just be that of someone you love.

At the Armidale blood donor centre they have plenty of appointment slots available over the next two weeks - specifically they are opening an extra day in Armidale next Wednesday 30th November and so this day presently has times available throughout from 8 am to 2pm for donors to book in at their convenience.

For futher details contact the Armidale Service on 6776 7001

Pricing Carbon: challenges and opportunities

Pricing Carbon: challenges and opportunities

The Carbon debate, which is never far from the headline news, has reached a new stage in its development with the passing of the Clean Energy Act in the Lower House in Canberra last week.

For many of us however, the ‘nitty gritty’ of pricing carbon is still unclear especially in terms of its economic benefits and challenges and its potential impacts on regional communities.

The Armidale Business Chamber will host a special presentation on Tuesday evening on the topic of Pricing Carbon and its implications for the rural sector in Australia.

Oscar Cacho, Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of New England and Annette Cowie, Director of the National Centre for Rural Greenhouse Gas Research, will present an overview of the reasons behind the international drive for pricing carbon and how carbon markets have evolved in recent years.

The lecture will include a discussion of the policies available to price carbon as well as a review of the Australian situation and the challenges in making carbon legislation operational.

Professors Cacho and Cowie will also highlight the research being undertaken at UNE addressing some of the emerging opportunities.

According to Executive Officer Elizabeth Egan, The Armidale Business Chamber is proud to be hosting this important event.

“The Chamber is of course an apolitical organisation but we feel it’s important to address the topics that concern our business community.

We are privileged in Armidale to have access to extraordinary expertise through the University of New England. The Chamber is delighted to collaborate with UNE on this important event which serves to present current research to the community,” says Ms Egan

Chamber Aims for Bigger and Better Business Awards

The Armidale Business Chamber has announced they will be moving their Annual Business Awards to a May ceremony from 2012.

The gala event usually set down for November will instead be held towards the end of the financial year and away from the already hectic ‘Christmas party season’.

Elizabeth Egan from the Business Chamber says they are very happy to be making the move to May in 2012.

“The build up to Christmas is the busiest for many local business owners, managers and staff. We think the Awards ceremony would be more meaningful if we invite people to relax and celebrate at the end of the financial year,” says Ms Egan

The Armidale Business Awards highlight excellence in the local business community and reward enterprises from a wide range of industries.

In previous years major awards have gone to The Phoenix Foundry (Uralla), ICT International (Armidale) , Kerry Turner and Liz Moffitt (both recipients of the New England Enterprising Women’s Award) and Legal Minds (Armidale).

New categories to be added in 2012 will include a Creative Industries Award and separate awards for Tourism, Accommodation, Pubs and Clubs, and Cafes and Restaurants.

All categories are judged by a panel of judges who will be looking for the unique qualities of the nominated businesses and what truly sets them apart. This might be an innovative product, attention to quality relationship building with clients or perhaps the development and adoption of technology to improve efficiencies.

The Business Awards celebration has become an important event on the Armidale Business calendar and gives exposure to the wealth of business expertise, and quality products and services thriving in the region.

Nominations for the 2012 Armidale Business Awards will open February.
