March 29, 2020

Dear Member/friend

Last Friday the New South Wales Government released details of the second stage of its economic package. Here is a link to the NSW Treasury page outlining the measures.

Covid-19 Stimulus

You will see that it includes:

  • The creation of a $1 Billion ”Working for NSW Fund” to create new jobs and retrain employees. 1000 new staff are to be added to Service NSW. Anyone interested can register their interest.
  • A deferral of Payroll tax for business with payrolls over $10million. This will not apply to nearly all businesses in Armidale.  The first package contained measures for businesses with payrolls under $10 Million. This package contains an additional 3 months deferral for them.
  • Deferral of gaming machine tax
  • Deferral of duty on lotteries and Keno for 6 months
  • Deferral of the parking space levy for 6 months
  • The government will defer rents for 6 months for commercial and not for profit tenants with less than 20 employees in Government properties.
  • There is also a boost in funding to prevent homelessness, for the Energy assistance scheme, to charities for food security and lifeline’s operations.

Today the Prime Minister announced a $1.1 Billion package for Medicare, domestic violence, mental health and emergency food services. Significantly for doctors and patients provision is now being made for telehealth consultations. For some in the bush that is not new, particularly with specialists. The amount of $669 million will however go to expand Medicare- subsidised telehealth services. Patients should now be able to consult their GPs from home for example. Here is the link to the press release. Please see the websites of the Australian or NSW Department of health websites for further detail.

Additionally there is talk about the Federal Government providing a wage subsidy and  action being taken on leases.  Once I  know further I will advise you of the details.

Unfortunately Armidale has had its first case confirmed case of COVID-19 today. This requires us to be ever more vigilant. It is tough for individuals and businesses but our strict adherence to the public health requirements will hasten the journey back to normal life.

In the meantime if you are concerned about your possible exposure to COVID-19 here is a link to a symptom checker.
